Question: hi i have a 1987 escort rs turbo its standard apart from exhaust and air filter. i had my car set up and the mechanic said that i have a sticking wastegate, ive never heard of this. ive taken the wastegate elbow off the turbo and the flap moves freely. he also said because of this my car will over and underboost which i have experienced. im stuck what to do next thanks
Answer: If it isn't sticking, you'll have to look elsewhere for the problem. It may be that the tendency is to overboost, but occasionally, the boost controller isn't working, causing it to rise and fall. You can eliminate that possibility by just running at actuator pressure, by connecting the compressor housing directly to the wastegate actuator, and see what happens. sometimes, it takes an expert to spend time looking, as the devil is in the detail!

Question: hi mate great site, i bought a nissan almera 2 months ago, its a 1.5 on a 02 plate. its had a misfire problem since 1 month, i called an electrician in 1 month ago and he said change the coil pack, so i changed that and it still made no difference, i have also changed the mass flow meter, and still the same, the car only misfires when i accelarate quickly, its ok if i accelerate gradually, would you know what else i can try???? as the electrician dont know himself. thankyou so much for your time and help
Answer: Hi. It sounds like a HT misfire, so his inclination to change the coil pack sounds reasonable. What plug gap are you using? try closing it down to .7mm and see if that helps. Failing that, take it someone with a rolling road, who can test it on the move.

Question: Hi Alan you fitted a vf35 for me a couple of weeks ago very pleased with the results, how much to fit a fmic and remap cheers
Answer: Hi Gary - roughly £800 to supply and fit the intercooler. We've done loads of these, and you'd get a really tidy job. I'd say £140 for mapping with the new cooler, we should move forward a fair bit when that's done!

Question: Hey Alan, I was on the turbotech site and they directed me here. I\'ve converted my mk2 golf 16v with a turbo technics kit i picked up second hand. i have 2 questions: 1. I have hooked up the MAP sensor for my turbo tech ecu, so do i block off the original vacuum going to the factory ecu or do I leave it? 2. Does the fifth injector spray on idle or does it only come in up higher in the revs? Your help would be much appreciated as not many people know about these kits, Thanks.
Answer: Hi Conor. You can leave the original pipe to the ECU connected, just T off for the map sensor. The fifth injector should only spray when the turbo is producing boost.

Question: Hello Alan, I have been reccomended to talk to you by Triton Motorsport in Dorset regarding my assumed ECU problem. It\'s an FM Link ECU (Quite old). The car is reaching about 3psi boost before hitting what feels like fuel cut (Boost Set to 13psi). All mechanical sides have been checked and fine but triton couldn\'t read what the ECU was doing. Do you think you could help out? Many Thanks Lewis
Answer: I'd try www.bbrgti.com first, they are the evolution of the old Brodie Brittain that designed that set up to start with. We don't have any means of communicating with that ECU, although there may be something else other than that playing up. If you can't find anybody else to help you, we'll take a look, on the basis of at least getting you off in the right direction. An alternative is to consider a new management system, there have been developments recently, using Megasquirt, that might suit your car.
